Clinico-Pathologic Evaluation & Medical Treatment of Oral Leukoplakia

چکیده
Leukoplakia is defined as a predominantly white lesion of the oral mucosa that cannot be characterized as any other definable lesion. Histopathological diagnosis is needed to evaluate prognosis of this lesion. Chewing tobacco and smoking are distinct risk factors particularly among males in certain countries; however it has been noted that females or non-smokers may be at risk of malignant transformation. HPV has been detected in oral dysplasia lesions and cancer in non-smokers. Malignant transformation rates of oral leukoplakia (OL) range from 0.13 to 17.5%, while the rates of five year cumulative malignant transformation range from 1.2 to 14.5%. Although the administration of retinoic acid and beta-carotene has some efficacy to resolve OL, the role of photodynamic therapy (PDT) is believed to play an important therapeutic role in these patients. This article emphasizes need of uniform classification methods to evaluate the malignant potential of leukoplakia, and new treatment avenues in its resolution.

Oral leukoplakia - is biopsy at the initial appointment a must?
BACKGROUND Oral leukoplakia is a potentially malignant disorder of the oral cavity. Leukoplakias with chances of undergoing malignant transformation owing to the presence of dysplastic changes may not be clinically distinguishable from leukoplakias without dysplasia. The study was carried out to evaluate the usefulness of biopsy in assessing the clinico-pathologic correlations of oral leukoplak...

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Oral leukoplakia (OL) is a common premalignant lesion. The possible benefits of specific interventions in preventing a malignant transformation of OL are not well understood. This review assesses different invasive treatment techniques for OL and evaluate the optimal treatment possibilities.METHODS: A Medline (PubMed) search was conducted and heterogeneity between the studie...
متن کاملThe Expression of P53 in Leukoplakia, Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Normal Oral Epithelium Using Immunohistochemical Staining Method
Background & Aims: Leukoplakia is the most common premalignant or potentially malignant lesion of the oral mucosa and its potentiality for malignant transformation is unpredictable. The aim of the present study was to evaluate p53 expression in normal oral epithelium, leukoplakia and oral squamous cell carcinoma. Methods: The standard Biotin streptavaidin peroxidase immunohistochemical staining...

متن کاملOral leukoplakia, a precancerous lesion of squamous cell carcinoma, in patients with long-term pegylated liposomal doxorubicin treatment
Pegylated liposomal doxorubicin (PLD) has a good safety profile, but long-term use has been associated with development of squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue and oral cavity (SCCTO) in some patients. The study objective was to estimate the prevalence of oral leukoplakia, a known precursor of SCCTO, in patients with ovarian cancer and long-term PLD use. After approval of the institutional revi...
